The Louisville Zoo and Speed Art Museum are joining forces again to offer this unique camp experience! Explore the culture of some of the World’s wildest places, and the animals that inspire their artistic expression. Discover different art mediums such as drawing and printmaking, and design your own exhibition that will be displayed at the Louisville Zoo. This camp will take place entirely at the Zoo.

Polar Opposites, June 22 - 26 or July 20 - 24
Bundle up for an exploration of the Planet’s coldest regions. Discover the techniques animals use to survive in harsh winter conditions, explore the differences of the Earth’s poles, and discover how arctic explorers use technology, training, and patience to journey to these untouched places.

Uncover the secrets of the animal kingdom’s most extreme inhabitants. Campers will explore some of the most unforgiving places on the planet, from the deep, deep sea to the hot, hot desert! How do animals survive in these habitats? Find out this week!

The animal world is full of myths, legends, and sayings that are often not true. Campers will be busting myths all week during this fun and interactive program!

Zoo Exhibit Design, July 27 - 31
Have you ever wondered how zoo exhibits are designed? During this program, campers will learn all that is required to create a new exhibit and design their own! They will meet staff that helped create the Louisville Zoo’s award winning exhibits like Islands, Gorilla Forest and Glacier Run. Special tours are planned so campers will understand the complexity of zoo design.

Can tigers get an X-ray? How do you medicate a snake? A career in the field of veterinary medicine is always fascinating and challenging! From preventative care to dental exams to surgery, you will learn about caring for the health of endangered species at our Zoo, and what it takes to become a Veterinarian or Vet Tech. Get a behind-the-scenes tour of our on-site animal hospital, meet one of our veterinary staff members, and touch some of our small education animals!

Wild Service Day!, June 16 or July 14
Here is your chance to participate in some hands-on projects that benefit your Zoo, and give you some service learning hours as well! Possible projects include planting, making enrichment items for animals, cleaning, and becoming biofact ambassadors to guests. We will also see some education animals up-close, AND even include a behind-the-scenes tour to thank you for your hard work! Rain or shine, we will be busy. Please dress for dirt!

Can recycling help save gorillas and their forests? Could carpooling protect polar bears and the tundra? Find the answers to these and other questions, and become a true superhero for the planet! The Louisville Zoo would like to invite home learners in grades K-5 to join us for a day devoted to the topic of classification. Meet educators and animal ambassadors as you engage in activities focused on how and why animals are grouped together.  Themes of “vertebrates vs. invertebrates”, “life cycles”, and “animal body coverings” are sure to keep your family engaged as you follow along in your Family Field Guide and tour the Zoo.  Online preregistration is required to participate.

Women in Conservation, September 26

It is no secret that most of the significant research on great apes has been done by women in the past 50 years. Your young primatologists will be inspired to be conservation heroes by hearing the stories of Jane Goodall, Birutë Galdikas, and Louisville’s own Dian Fossey. Starting at 6 p.m. guests will receive a pizza dinner at the Louisville Zoo’s African Outpost.   Our education staff will then lead primate-focused activities, close up animal encounters, and a guided night walk.  Indoor and outdoor sleeping accommodations are available.  In the morning enjoy a continental breakfast sponsored by Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and an sunrise tour before you depart at 9 a.m. Online preregistration is required. Event is appropriate for all Scout levels. Ages 5 & up.

Howl-oween Zoo Snooze, October 3
New for 2015: This year the World’s Largest Halloween Party doesn’t have to end when the trick-or-treating is through. Extend the family-friendly fun by spending the night at the Louisville Zoo.  Your evening will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a pizza dinner at our African Outpost restaurant. It will also include trick-or-treating, an up-close animal encounter, and creepy-crawly educational activities.  Indoor sleeping spaces are provided (please bring sleeping bags and pillows).
